Jan 3: Was downstairs. Took down tree.

Jan 4: Got letter from Dr. Sodoro. He said go to Kentville for observation!

Jan 5: Rettie came up to see me before she went home. [probably Rettie Hendsbee dau of Dan and Mary Hannah (Grover) Hendsbee - pf]

Jan 9: Aunt Fan washed. Was up here. I gave her paper dolls for Marion.

Jan 10: Albert Williams was downstairs tonight.

Jan 12: Work on the roads. Carroll worked.

Jan 13: They worked on road again.

Jan 15: Net George's mother buried today in Cole Harbour.

Jan 17: Pa and Carroll up in woods.

Jan 18: Pa fell and hurt his hand.

Jan 19: Mr. Beaton was here to dinner. Wrote to Essie. Wrote poem Advantage in Troubles. Jamie in talking to Charlie McCarthy [Marion's ventriloquist's doll she had won -pf]

Jan 21: Church tonight. I wrote some. Pa was home. The rest went to church.

Jan 23: Pa came back from Antigonish. Came to Earn Hensbee's on bus and came with Earn.

Jan 24: Beatty [Munroe] fixing davenport. Work on roads again.

Jan 25: Guild at Mary's for the first time.

Jan 26: Mama washed up my room. I got washed myself.

Jan 27: Jamie played in my room. After that Carroll played down in the hall [way, where there was a daybed at the bottom of the stairs. They were playing fiddle - pf]

Jan 28: Mama went to Lydia's tonight. I blew out my light early.

Feb 5: Carroll [Feltmate her brother] went to Queensport today to help Uncle Simon [Williams] with wood.

Feb 8: Went downstairs before supper to see sleet on the field, like lights on a Xmas tree.

Feb 9: Big blizzard today. Carroll called up tonite.Road work up Haulover way up 9a.m.) Ella McDonald is to Ida's didn't feel well went down with teacher.

Feb 12: Arthur Beatty from Beckerton here til 2 p.m.   Carroll came home from Queensport tonight

Feb 13: The vessel Silver Arrow went out. Arthur didn't go. Stayed up Haulover. Billy Si [Feltmate] wanted Carroll to go.

Feb 14: Went down to dinner (till 2). Connie upstairs all p.m. I read all evening. So no rest today tsk tsk.

Feb 17: Slept a little p.m. Chedabucto & freight boat blowing at the same time.

Feb 19: They shoveled saw dust in the ice house.

Feb 21: Big steamer in.

Feb 22: Meeting in store for ice house. Guild to Mrs. Thurloe's {Minnie married to Thurloe Munroe]. Drowned poor ole Tom [their aged cat]

Feb 25: Joe Munroe was to the house this evening a few minutes. Strange preachers in Methodist church for 4 nights ending tomorrow night.

Feb 26 Bill Conrod here. Pa & Jamie trying checkers. Pa heard from Celina Grover! [Celina or Selena was born in Whitehead c 1876 and married John William Spears in Whitehead in 1890. I do not know where she was living at this time. We have a tiny cup and saucer in the family archives that Selena gave to Marion -pf]

Feb 27: Pa is ceiling up the kitchen stairs today.

Feb 28: had 2 pictures taken out by the kitchen veranda. Lillian Conrad selling Easter cards. Ellison Munroe collecting for Billy Al [Feltmate, son of Allie and Agnes (Rhynold) Feltmate. ]

Mar 3: Carroll made clam chowder for dinner. Olivia Ann died yesterday. [Olivia Ann, daughter of Angus and Eliza Ann (McDuff) Duncan, and wife of Robert Creamer]

Mar 4: Billy Al's wife died last evening 7. [his wife was Martha (Boudreau)-pf]  Uncle Angus [father of Olivia Ann] here today.

Mar 6: Billy Al's wife buried from Methodist Church.

Mar 8: Road work by forge. Lizzie Ceret said Mrs Feltmate had sore face. Guild at Ethel's. Pa heard from Howe Welles. Our moving picture [the March of Time newsreel] is out.

Mar 9: Didn't go down. Read McCall's and knit.

Mar 10: Mr Armsworthy Celie's father ws buried today Philips Harbour. [Celie (Armsworthy) Uloth, wife of Albert]

Mar 11: Meeting at Hall on lobsters with Brian Marr.

Mar 13: Study Club meeting in Hall.

Mar 15: Went down after doing my nails bright rose red.

Mar 16: Saw the Canso minister going up from Can's [Feltmate]. He had stayed all night. Harbour is full of ice.

Mar 17: Heard Canso fog alarm plain as our own. St Patrick's Day and Palm Sunday too.

Mar 18: Falcon [Duncan] had sawing party. Ice gone out.

Mar 19: they sawed again at Falcon's.  Edna & Wilfred moved over from Yankee Cove [Rhynold].

Mar 20: Liberal meeting tonight.

Mar 21: Billy Al took his 2 children to Dover [to live there - pf].

Mar 22: Basil Hadley also Fred Harris down today.

Mar 26: Election (Dominion). Liberals 72 Conservatives 70 for Whitehead.

Mar 27: Liberal sin power again. Earl & Carroll hauling wood today.

Mar 28: Put in some pieces in scrap books. Talking to Lawrence out the window [Munroe]. Janette & Vivian were selling.

Mar 29: Dave go this radio going.

April 6: Leslie & Falcon had the new pony down here. Helena's picture in paper. Married! [Falcon Duncan and his son Leslie. Helena Williams, dau of Marion's Uncle Simon and Aunt Ann (Grover), married Peter David Carroll in Halifax -pf]

Apr 11: Rough out but they set a few pots [for lobsters]

Apr 12: Vern working at Jamie's boat, here to dinner & supper.

Apr 19: Fred's baby sick yesterday and today

Apr 20: Fred's baby died last night about 9. Surf made first trip today. [Fred & Clara (Jones) Rhynold's son Morris William b 9 March, 1940]

April 21: Church a.m. Mr Hatton there. He brought 2 Bob Georges and Ken Lumson up with him. Clara's baby buried today by Canso Methodist minister. Snowing!

April 22: Storm. High tide up to the bridge. Fred's boat smashed. Sidney's went under. Arklo's boat went ashore they say and Paddy Boudreau almost drowned. Rain & sleet & wind. [Fred Rhynold, Sidney Grover, Arklo Munroe] 

April 23: Mail came this morning in a sleigh!

Apr 24: no mail

Apr 25: no mail

Apr 26: the mail came. Mrs Conrad got it from the Haulover today but they shoveled for tonite. Poem in Health Rays. Ray Hadley came from Halifax. [Marion's poem The Bright Side was published in the April 1940 issue of Health Rays, "A Magazine of Health and Good Cheer" published monthly by the Kentville Sanitorium -pf]

Apr 29: Saw Ray going to shop.

Apr 30: Rae talking to me out my window. Looks grand in his suit.

May 4: Parcel from Simpsons, slippers & material. Leona George has scarlet fever.

May 5: Heard Pervis has a son born last evening. [Daniel Purvis George and his wife Lillian Rose (Cooke) had son Harold Daniel George -pf]

May 6: Ross [Feltmate] was here today said Margaret [his wife] was very sick. Mrs Feltmate has been sick. Edward has to rest 10 days. Leona George has scarletina.

May 8: Washed stockings powder puffs. Got housecoat from Reta for pattern. Mama got letter from Uncle Will's wife. [This must have been Elizabeth "Libby" (Schrader) of Tor Bay who married Marion's great uncle William David Jamieson in 1880 -pf]

May 9 [Marion's birthday}: Jamie [her brother] gave me $2 and a bar and 1/2 doz oranges. Mama got me fruit salad. There were a lot of agents to the store. Heard that Beatty [Munroe] got his hand smashed yesterday. Edna here til 7:30. Arthur Beatty and Austin [Feltmate] & Sidney [Grover] and we had cake.

May 10: Edward went to Antigonish for X-ray.

May 11: Uncle George [Grover] brought a bunch of may flowers for me. Meeting for union tonight.

May 13: Got my shopping bag & sockees from Eatons. Cleared up some dolls trash a.m.

May 14: Aunt Fan washed and made my house coat. Wilfred P & Anderson's son came. Saw Walter Dort & Harry Cashen others in car.

May 15: All day Wilfred, Ainsley and Anderson were gone working at the car. They were out all night but got home this evening. Mrs Angus Munroe here, her son Fred and others: Katie, Joe, Joan, Mrs Clatin Munroe, Gleneth (about 4).

May 16: They worked at car.I spoke to them from the window in Jamie's room. Show tonight.

May 17: The N.G. boys left this morning [New Glasgow.] Saw Gill's new truck.

May 18: Dance at Ralph's.

May 20: Mama & Pa was planting potatoes. Mama washed my hair. Dora is in hospital for appendix.

May 23: Got answer to appointment.

May 25: Pie Social for school in Hall. Billy Si stayed here all night.

May 27: Left for Kentville. Jamie & I to Monestery. Train left 1:12. Elmer Humphreys took us to Johns. His brother took us to Truro, Gordon Humphrey.

May 28: Left Truro 6:30 changed at Windsor  got in Kentville about 11:45. Had dinner in Dining Room. Getting on o.k.

May 29: X-ray, blood test, fleurascope by Dr Berkawitz.

May 30: Ferris wheel in town.

May 31: physical exam & history by Rafield.

June 1: Went to dinner at Ella's table with 2 curlers in my hair! Apple Blossom parade. Sailors, soldiers, girls in red on horseback. San float took prize. Navy Band played at Hall.

June 2: Church parade. Sailors, soldiers, some in navy kilts, plaid caps. Laurie & Huntly Fanning here. Band concert tonite too.

June 5: They are playing croquet.

June 12: Got letter from Mum & money order.

June 13: Letter from Mum

June 16: Band Concert from Springhill.

June 17: I left Kentville 1.20. Had company of a French girl as far as Windsor, a Cape Breton girl as far as Truro.

June 18: Sadie & kids went to church. I slept .[ Marion is staying at her cousin Arthur and Sadie Armsworthy's home near Truro -pf]

Jun 19: Left Truro. Had a P.E. I. lady as far as Monestry. Came on bus to Earn's. Came in mail to Whitehead.

June 20: Cleve buried. Ivy, Clarel, & Melba home from Halifax. [Leander Cleveland Munroe had died on 17 June, son of William L. and Jane (Fougere) Munroe-pf]

June 27: Marguerite Jamieson here to supper.

June 28: Calvin Bennet had dinner here. Two young boys up Vharlie McDougal & Joe ---

July 3: Agatha [Munroe] over working on books in shop.Calvin B & Emet M. up in gas truck.

July 5: Joe Fanning & wife, Gerald & Hope, little Geraldine, Mr Harry Darra & little Katharine here. [Joe Fanning's wife was Harriet "Hattie" Lerella Feltmate, Gerald and Hope were their children, and little Geraldine was the daughter of Hope and her husband Charlie Jewers -pf]

July 6: Went to Nelt's p.m. Saw Harold McKenzie today. Mr & Mrs Conrad here tonite. We played till 11 p.m.

July 7: Fine. I picked clovers. Frank Cornet, Lu Hefferman & F. Spears down today.

July 8: Fine. Eliza Anne, Vivian, Claire, George Taylor & Jean Oikle came. Heard explosion of some kind this morning and felt it.

July 12: The Liverpool crowd went home early a.m.

July 15: Show in Hall tonight

July 16: Port Felix picnic

July 23: Freight boat in to Nelt's

July 26: Dance in Yankee Cove. Carroll played.

July 29; They made hay here.

Aug 1: It blew while Carroll & Dave [Duncan] were outside [fishing in boat-pf]

Aug 3: to see Johanna's pansies. Nelt [Grover, Johanna's husband] gave us syrup.

Aug 5: Airplane landed in the water here in the cove. 2 officers ashore to telephone.

Aug 6: Sydney boys in air force suits brough gas eaarly a.m. by truck.Airplane left before dinner.

Aug 9: Mary Conway & crowd stopped here this evening.

Aug 11: A load of visitors here. Norwegians to Ida's, 2 cars of Conway. Al Jamieson etc.

Aug 13: Betty Campbell Johnston and family came last night

Aug 14: Jamie went to Highland Games. Was picking maiden berries today. Not many. Pa went to show.

Aug 19: Registration day

Aug 20: Mama & I registered. Willie & Clarence took us up.

Aug 23: Last night Gran awful sick . Dr Sodero came. I was up after 3 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Aug 29: Grandmother had a bad spell again.

Aug 31: Fanny Al [Munroe] here  Mary Ellen's little girl Eileen got hooked. Eliza & Lillian Phalen here. Young Smith and another fellow from Sambro in shop playing.

Sep 1: Sambro boat left.

Sep 2: Ed Pyche called here. Port Felix picnic

Sep 5: Gran awful sick. I stayed to Sidney's all night.

Sep 6: Went back of island. Took fancy work. wrote. Stayed Sidney's tonight.

Sep 7: Liz Peart Geoff John Dillon Burn George stayed to Uncle Dan's [Dan George] til today. Bill Kline there now. Agatha & June to Connie's. I stayed there [at Sidney, Ina, & Connie's house] again. ina & Alice stayed here [to help with Grandmother.-pf]

Sep 9: Mrs Thurloe [Minnie wife of Thurloe Munroe] stayed all night.

Sep 10: Grandmother died at 10 to 2 p.m. [Eunice Leannas (Duncan) Feltmate, widow of Samuel D. Feltmate, daughter of Thomas and Eliza Ann (McKinnon Newell) Duncan -pf].  Aunt Fan & Mum & Pa there beside her. I stayed to Ina's. Pa to Canso, sent telegrams. Casket came from Free Rhynold's.

Sep 11: Nelt, Johanna, Sidney, Ina, [all Grovers], Uncle Angus [Grandmother's brother], Mary, Clare, Agnes here early. Ethel & George [Grover], Ida & Dan [George], Fan & Jim [Grover] sat up. I stayed to Ina's. [My father Jamie said Grandmother Feltmate was "laid out" in the parlour at the house for visitation -pf]

Sep 12: Abe & Clissie [Uloths], Ruby, Harry, viola arrived. Funeral at 2. Rain! Harry, Abe, Wilfred Ehler, Jim & Fan to supper. Mr & Mrs Abot called. Mr Hatton up yesterday. Also Chester, Edie McDuff & Reta Hurst. I stayed home. Aunt Fan slept with me.

Sep 13: Had eels for dinner.

Sep 14: Lexie, Helen, Hugh, Anna arrived. (Lexie here). aunt Fan went home. Pa to Port Felix Meeting. Aunt Ethel, George, teacher, Leslie, Helen here tonight. Also Gorley Webber.

Sep 15: They all went back to Trenton. Bess Gosby was to Sidney's.

Sep 20: worked on sampler. Tug and skow in today.

Sep 21: Carroll, Everett, George F, Margaret W and O'Leary girl had accident last night. I was in shop with Pa tonite. no customers.

Sep 22: Anne Hefferman Lu & little boy here.

Sep 23: I heard King's speech at Nelt's. took milk bottle up to Ina's. Joe Grover here.

Sep 25: Picked over Mum's blueberries. She preserved 'em. They got a new stove over to Can's. Morris Jennix is in port. Allison Conrod here few minutes tonight.

Sep 26: Mama and I everybody were at Nelt's sewing quilt buns [? not sure of that last word -pf]

Sep 27: Went to Nelt's house a.m. sewed quilt buns tonite. [again I am not sure of that word-pf]

Sep 28: Jamie aboard the Montcalm. Maurice Jennix here to supper. Eddie & Leslie Jennix here tonight.

Sep 29: Montcalm went out early.

Oct 6: I played, Mum played. Pa & Mum to cemetery.

Oct 7: Sewed quilt block tonight.

Oct 8: Mama's wedding anniversary. 38 years I think. [She was correct. Margaret Ardelhia Grover and William Thomas "Billy Tom" Feltmate were married on Oct 8, 1902-pf]

Oct 9: Pa went to audit books in Port Felix meeting tonight.

Oct 10: Saw Lawrence M. from Yankee Cove.

Oct 11: Leslie's [Duncan] birthday. Venie married. [Lavinia Ainsley Armsworthy of Belmont, NS, daughter of William Armsworthy and Hannah Costella (Feltmate) married William Smith in Halifax. -pf].  Went to Nelt's for onions. Boat in for fish. Confirmation. Mary R, Dave, Edna R, Gloria Joyce and Genette George.

Oct 15: Mama went to quilt at Lizzie's. [(Duncan Rhynold) Porter]

Oct 18: Jim Lukeman is in a vessel here.

Oct 22: Vestry meeting at Hall tonight. 3 fellows here off Nova. Jim O'Connel from Yarmouth, Landry from Petite De Grats, Sid Walsh from Spry Bay.

Oct 23: Some of the men from here were to the Rectory today.

Oct 26: Freight boat in a.m. but I wasn't up. Rainy. Willie U[loth] & Burns came from Halifax. Willia U came with Willie G, Burns on Nova. 

Oct 27: Snow squals. Pa to George Munroe's. Mrs Norm going away with Beryl.

Oct 28: Carroll going on Surf in the morning he says. Convention at Amherst. Medicine from Sodero (capsules).

Oct 29: Avery from Larry's River to dinner.

Oct 30: got my shoes from Simpson's tonight. Too big.

Oct 31: Halloween kiddies here. Thelma Gloria Vivian Joyce & Conrad girls.

Nov 2: Lovely day. Jamie gunning with Jim and Huntley. also Calvin & George. Nova in.

Nov 7: Jamie went to Cole Harbor to Henry Uloth's birthday party 90 yrs old. [Jamie actually had to make a speech at the party, and it is carefully written out in an old school scribbler in the family archives. Henry Uloth was father of Marion's & Jamie's Aunt Ethel who was married to George Grover -pf]

Nov 8: gill McEachran here to supper. Nic Landry and Jim O'Connel here tonight.

Nov 9: Didn't sleep last night. Got up 2.30 or about that and got cookies downstairs.

Nov 10: Jamie called Elmer Humphreys. Nova in took Pa's fish.

Nov 14: Laurier is in tonight. [steamer]

Nov 15: The Laurier is still in.

Nov 17: Nova in this morning. O'Connel's wife with him this trip. Alice [Duncan] sent me duck for dinner.

Nov 20: Aunt Fan papered bedroom. Pa & I played a few records. Mama & Aunt Fan to Alice's.

Nov 21: I tuned my guitar Hawaiian.

Nov 23: Got $110 for my 10 cent policy. Pa & Jamie fixed organ today.

Nov 25: Pa to meeting at Larry's river. Laurier in harbor today. Ironed Xmas papers today. Got parcel from Eatons.

Nov 27: I started to learn to make cushions.

Dec 2: Pa, Mama & I looking for Xmas presents.

Dec 3: Snow and hail came down. We sent orders.

Dec 4: Nova in with Nelt's freight to this wharf. Nice day. We sang before we went to bed. 4 of us.

Dec 7: Hause Pyche there. [Horace Pyche]

Dec 9: Jamie fixed doll.

Dec 10: Agatha made me a doll's dress. Worked some on cushion. Falcon fixed head on my doll.

Dec 11:Nova II in tonight. Uncle Angus birthday party.

Dec 12: To wharf while Pa wheeled Hause's stuff.  Sewed for doll.

Dec 13: crocheted.

Dec 14: Finished cushion. Wrapped gifts tonight. Merle came home from Montreal.

Dec 18: Xmas school concert.

Dec 20: Jamie's party at Aunt Ethel's [Grover]. Willie G took me up.Stayed all night. Shim is staying too. [this was a surprise party for Jamie, as he was about to leave Whitehead and go to Ontario to attend Radio College in Toronto.-pf]

Dec 22: Duncan McDonald in car accident coming home for Xmas.

Dec 24: Carroll & I tied up parcels. Jamie & Connie delivering.

Dec 26: Jamie left for Toronto a.m.

Dec 27: Pa, Ina, Willie G & I to Canso. Saw Margaret Williams at Chester's. Was to Net's and Fanny Zinc's. Also Johnny Marr and Pembrokes.

Dec 31: Heard Lettie McDuff died yesterday.
